Heartworm Disease (Dirofilaria immitis)

Heartworms are large worms that live the heart and pulmonary (lung) arteries of an infected dog or cat. They contract the larva from the bite of an infected mosquito. This is a life threatening condition that is risky and costly to treat. Prevention is key and should be started at 8 weeks of age. Heartworm prevention should be given year round.
