Pet emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Whether it’s a sudden limp after an afternoon walk, persistent vomiting on a Saturday, or your pet simply isn’t acting like themselves on a Friday evening, getting timely veterinary care can make all the difference.
That’s why Island Life Animal Hospital is excited to announce our new urgent care hours, giving families more access to veterinary care when they need it most.
Our New Urgent Care Hours
Friday: 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Our team is here to help pets experiencing illnesses or injuries that cannot wait for a routine appointment.
What Happens When You Arrive?
When your pet comes to us for urgent care, our first priority is determining how stable they are.
Our veterinary team will quickly assess important indicators including:
- Alertness and responsiveness
- Energy level
- Signs of pain
- Heart rate and pulse quality
- Breathing rate and effort
- Gum color
- Overall condition
This initial evaluation helps us determine how quickly treatment needs to begin.
Gathering Your Pet’s History
A thorough history is an important part of diagnosing your pet.
We may ask questions such as:
- When did the problem begin?
- Has your pet been vomiting or had diarrhea?
- Have you noticed changes in urination?
- Is there blood in the urine or stool?
- Has your pet been eating and drinking normally?
- Could your pet have gotten into a toxin, medication, or foreign object?
These details help us narrow down possible causes and determine the next steps.
Diagnostics Tailored to Your Pet
Every emergency is different, so every diagnostic plan is customized to your pet’s needs.
Depending on their condition after we assess through physical examination and vital signs
, we may recommend:
- In-house bloodwork
- Digital radiographs (X-rays)
- Ultrasound
Once we have more information, we’ll discuss our findings, possible diagnoses, and treatment recommendations with you so you can make informed decisions about your pet’s care.
When Specialty Care Is Needed
Some emergencies require advanced specialty or 24-hour critical care. If your pet would benefit from additional services, we’ll help coordinate a referral to one of our trusted specialty partners, including Epic Specialty & Emergency Pet Care, BluePearl Veterinary Hospital, Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists, or Specialists in Companion Animal Neurology (SCAN).
Our goal is always to ensure your pet receives the right care at the right time.
