How to Easily Keep Your Pet Safe Every Halloween
October 26, 2021It’s a warm summer night, to cool your furry friend, Lexi, you give her a big juicy watermelon piece. She gobbles it right up (what Lab wouldn’t?!) If you have ever had a Lab, you know exactly what I am talking about.
But you then think to yourself, should I have given her that watermelon piece, is watermelon ok to give Lexi?
YES! Watermelon is perfectly fine for Lexi, BUT there are certain fruits that can cause damage or be life-threatening to your most beloved friend.
Here is a simple list of possible toxic fruit for your beloved friend:
Cherries
Cherry pits can be a choking hazard and unless you want to give the Heimlich, we advise to just skip the cherries.
Avocado (yes it is in fact a fruit)
The pit of an avocado can cause Miss Lexi to have an upset tummy, intestinal blockage, or pancreatitis. Keep the guacamole away.
Grapes (means raisins too)
TOXIC! Lexi does not want to go into kidney failure.
Tomatoes
Too much spaghetti sauce can cause upset tummy. If you grow tomatoes, try to keep your furry pal away as some parts of the plant can cause upset tummy as well.
Wild Berries
Some berries are good (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries), but some wild berries are toxic. Watch for signs of lethargy, tremors, vomiting, diarrhea and get your pup to us right away!
Lemons & Limes
High levels of citric acid can cause upset tummy & vomiting. Also do not give your friend any citrus essential oils as well.
Fruit Snacks
Having kids, we had to add this! Super high in sugar and causes upset tummy for poor Lexi.
Stay away from this toxic fruit list and Lexi will be paw-fectly happy (and healthy)!
If your pup (or cat) do get anything toxic, contact us to make an appointment right away!
Just remember to wash fruit thoroughly and no canned fruit (high in sugar). You can also freeze pieces of fruit to give your furry pal on that hot summer day.
